Spanish League Wants El Clasico Switched to Madrid Over Catalan Protests

first_imgMadrid: The Spanish football league said Wednesday it had asked the country’s football federation to move the next ‘El Clasico’ between Real Madrid and Barcelona to Madrid following violent protests by separatists in Catalonia.”We have requested the competitions committee of the Spanish Football Federation to meet and change the location of El Clasico to Madrid because of exceptional circumstances beyond our control,” the league (LFP) said in a statement sent to AFP. According to Spanish media reports Catalan grassroots separatist groups and political parties are preparing a demonstration in Barcelona, the Catalan capital, at 1 pm (1100 GMT) on October 26, the day the La Liga clash is scheduled to take place at Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium. The football federation (RFEF) confirmed it had received the request and said the two clubs had until Monday to submit their opinions before it makes its decision.Protests have erupted across Catalonia after Spain’s Supreme Court on Monday issued heavy prison sentences of between nine and 13 years to Catalan separatist leaders convicted of sedition over the 2017 referendum and short-lived declaration of independence.Scores of people have been hurt and dozens arrested in the past two nights of clashes between protesters and police in Barcelona and other Catalan cities. The convictions on Monday revived tensions in the wealthy northeastern region, split between those loyal to Madrid and those who want it to break away from Spain. In Barcelona on Tuesday night, police charged hundreds of masked demonstrators who threw projectiles at officers and set garbage bins and cardboard boxes on fire. One of the most-watched games in club football, ‘El Clasico’ is often key in deciding the destiny of the La Liga title. barcelonaCataloniaEl Clasicofootball First Published: October 16, 2019, 11:35 PM IST Get the best of News18 delivered to your inbox – subscribe to News18 Daybreak. Boxing: Demetrius Andrade becomes promotional free agent

first_imgAdvertisementFormer WBO junior middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade is now a promotional free agent after parting ways with his longtime promoters. Andrade has been with Star and Banner for almost a decade. This is a move that some feel Andrade probably should’ve made a long time ago. No disrespect to Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing and Arthur Pelullo of Banner Promotions, but those guys simply couldn’t seem to give him the type of opportunities most felt matched his talent.Demetrius Andrade is now a promotional free agent, he’s already attracted attention from Top Rank and Eddie Hearn. As a player in one of boxing’s glamour divisions, this is a big deal #Boxing— Mike Coppinger (@MikeCoppinger) June 28, 2018There’s plenty of pundits that feel Andrade himself was a big reason why also. Outrageous monetary demands and his overall perspective of things was a problem they claim. This is what Andrade had to say about parting ways with his long-term promoters:“It’s been a long journey.  I’ve learned a lot and I really appreciate everything that Artie and Joe did for me and my career.  Sometimes it seemed like it was us against the whole world trying to get the top fighters to get in the ring with me but at the end of the day Artie and Joe guided me to two World Championships and I really want to thank them for all their efforts!  I’m hoping to be back in the ring again very soon and get an opportunity to show the world that I’m going to be a World Champion once again. Both DeGuardia and Pelullo said they “wish nothing but the best” to Andrade when reached for comment.Advertisementlast_img read more

Pakistan have potential to deliver at World Twenty20, says Shahid Afridi

first_imgPakistan failed to impress in the Asia Cup T20 cricket tournament but captain Shahid Afridi on Friday asserted that his side can deliver in the World Twenty20 later this month if they have self-belief . Pakistan failed to enter the final of the Asia Cup T20 but Afridi said that they are still a good side.”We’re good cricketers, just that we need to have more self-belief,” Afridi said when asked about his team’s performance in the Asia Cup T20 and the upcoming World Twenty20.”That’s what helped us in the chase today. I don’t fall down easily, yes, it was tough but I’m confident the boys can deliver,” Afridi said after his side beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in an inconsequential match here.”We had to change a few things, we worked hard and it helped today. We wanted to keep wickets intact in the first six overs and it worked,” he added.Afridi was happy that the reserve players were also given a chance ahead of the World T20 in India. Also read: Pakistan to access security before World T20 “We’ve backed players, we did not want to tamper too many things, but the selectors have done well to give everyone a sincere opportunity,” said Afridi.Umar Akmal, Man-of-the-Match for his 37-ball 48, gave credit to his captain and team management for the win.”Credit to the captain, coaching staff and team management. (Coach) Waqar showed me a motivational video before the match. That fired me up. We wanted to sign off with a win, good to see some rhythm to our game before the World T20,” he said.advertisementSri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal said his side played some good cricket overall but injuries had impacted on their performance.”Overall we played some good cricket. Injuries are the main issues, we haven’t been able to get the best combination as a result. Hopefully players will recover in time,” he said.Talking about the match, Chandimal said, “We were 10-15 short with the bat, that was the turning point in this game. It was difficult to grip the ball with this dew.”last_img read more

World T20: England take on unpredictable Afghanistan in crucial clash

first_imgEngland aim to safely negotiate a potential banana skin in Afghanistan during their World T20 group phase match today and take a forward step on the road to the semifinals.England began their campaign on a wrong note, going down to the West Indies but bounced back superbly with a stupendous run chase against South Africa. Joe Root’s inspirational batting against South Africa papered the visible cracks in their bowling that went for plenty in both the matches.Afghanistan could be a tricky opposition, particularly after the impressive batting of Mohammad Shahzad and England would hope to safely negotiate an “unpredictable” opponent, as skipper Eoin Morgan conceded.”They are a dangerous side. They have played exciting cricket. But we know a lot about them. That is quite comforting. There is no stone left unturned. We have studied them intensely,” Morgan said at the post match press conference on Tuesday.”Their ultimate objective will be to beat one of the big teams.”England have the painful experience of slipping against the so called “minnows” in World T20 in 2014 when they where shocked by the Netherlands and Morgan said they are trying to take extra precaution to avoid such a travesty this time.”Holland was a unique set of circumstances. We were already out of the tournament. We came into the game with a completely wrong mindset. Being knocked out of the tournament is a terrible feeling. Tomorrow it will be about focusing on what we have to do and adjust to the conditions. I think if we do that hopefully we will perform well,” Morgan said.advertisementThe left-hander admitted that the unpredictability quotient of Afghanistan is what makes them dangerous.”Wouldn’t say it’s nervy but probably a little bit of unpredictability. It can be their strong point and certainly we have lacked consistency in recent times,” he pointed out.Morgan added they were focusing on the Afghans as a whole unit rather than on individuals though Morgan praised opener Shahzad for his aggressive hitting against Sri Lanka and South Africa.Afghanistan skipper Asghar Stanikzai expressed happiness at their performance so far despite being on the losing side in both their matches. They target at least a win against a Test-playing nation, which would intensify their appeals of getting to play more matches against them.”Looking forward to the England challenge. Definitely more pressure on England. We are eager to win at least a game against a big team,” Stanikzai said on Tuesday.Stanikzai hoped his team would benefit from the inputs of former India pacer and their bowling coach Manoj Prabhakar, who has immense knowledge of the Ferozeshah Kotla pitch.Morgan confessed that he had no idea how the pitch would behave, but backed his team to adjust to the conditions.”Took a look at the pitch. Not quite sure what it is expected to do. Lots of grass on it. We will look at it tomorrow and then decide on our team combination,” he said.last_img read more
