Tar Ponds Agency Meets Deadline

first_imgThe Sydney Tar Ponds Agency has answered hundreds of questions from the public and the joint review panel about the environmental impact statement on its plan to clean up the Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens sites. The questions are contained in 55 submissions from the public, and an additional 34 from the federal review panel which will conduct public hearings on the environmental impact statement this spring. Each submission contained multiple questions. Wilfred Kaiser, acting director of environmental services was assisted by teams from AMEC and Earth Tech, two engineering firms involved in providing support to the preparation of responses. A team of two dozen experts worked day and night, over two weeks, to answer all the questions by the March 2 deadline. “It’s really encouraging to see that so many people took the time to read the environmental impact statement,” said Frank Potter, acting CEO of the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency. “It shows the high level of interest people have in the cleanup. Their questions will help us refine our plan, and make it better.” Mr. Potter said the questions came from a broad spectrum of the public, and while many questions submitted related to the proposal to incinerate PCB contaminated material, many more dealt with a wide range of topics. The review panel must now evaluate the responses provided by the agency, to determine whether they have enough information to proceed to panel hearings. Once the panel is satisfied it has the information it needs, it will give 21 days notice of the start of the public hearings. It is possible public hearings could begin as early as April. Winter Sportfishing Season Announced

first_imgThe province is expanding winter sportfishing opportunities when the season opens on New Year’s day. A total of 38 waterways across Nova Scotia will open for rainbow trout, chain pickerel or perch on Thursday, Jan. 1. “Winter sportfishing has a strong history in Nova Scotia,” said Ronald Chisholm, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. “I am pleased to announce there will be three new lakes opened for rainbow trout and two opened for chain pickerel and perch this season.” The new waterways open this year for rainbow trout are Oathill, Maynard and Penhorn lakes in the Halifax Regional Municipality. Lake George and Lake Paul in Kings County are open for chain pickerel and white and yellow perch. “I encourage all winter anglers to enjoy the season,” said Mr. Chisholm. “Whether they are fishing from shore, in boats or through the ice, anglers should note changing conditions which could compromise their safety.” A 2008 general fishing licence is needed to winter fish. Licences can be purchased at Department of Natural Resources offices throughout the province, Access Nova Scotia’s Maritime Centre location, or selected authorized vendors. Licences are valid until March 31. The annual winter sportfishing weekend takes place Saturday, Feb. 14, and Sunday, Feb. 15. During that weekend, resident and non-resident anglers can fish in areas that are open for winter sportfishing without a general fishing licence. Cyberbullying Task Force Work Extended to February

first_imgSupport for the Cyberbullying Task Force has been so positive that it will take longer than expected to process all the feedback and recommendations from Nova Scotians. The task force will have until the end of February to deliver its report and recommendations to help with the problem of cyberbullying. “I have been very impressed with the high level of public interest and the willingness of many parts of our community to partner in finding better responses to the growing problems of bullying and cyberbullying,” said Wayne MacKay, Cyberbullying Task Force chair. “Forging these partnerships takes time but is well worth the effort.” Along with presentations from experts in the fields of bullying and cyberbullying, the task force received more than 5,000 responses to the online survey and conducted 35 focus groups involving about 1,000 students from across the province. The chair also had several speaking engagements on the topic, including meetings with the public. “Since the task force began, the response from Nova Scotians has been tremendous,” said Education Minister Ramona Jennex. “Our partners recognized from the onset that the original timeline was ambitious, and I acknowledge the need for more time to process the enormous amount of input, especially from students.” To get a better picture of the scope and prevalence of the problem, and to find out what students think are possible solutions, the task force increased the number of student focus groups from eight to 35. The Cyberbullying Task Force and Working Group are analyzing the information collected from the expert presentations, focus groups and online survey for use in the overall report. Minister Asks Workplaces To Refocus on Safety

first_imgSeven workplace deaths in just over a month should make Nova Scotia employers and employees think twice about the risks they face in the work they do. Between 2007 and 2011, an average of 25 workers died on the job, so this many deaths so early in the year is cause for concern. “This is a tragic start to 2012 and all of us must take immediate action to avoid further injuries, illnesses and deaths in our workplaces,” said Marilyn More, Minister of Labour and Advanced Education. “Whether one works on a hectic shop floor or a seemingly safe office, we need to change our ‘I’ve done this a million times so it must be safe’ mindset.” To date, two truckers died in separate motor vehicle accidents, two fishermen drowned while checking on lobster crates at low tide, a farm worker was killed by a falling tree and a sandblaster was crushed underneath equipment he was cleaning. All of these incidents remain under investigation. A shipyard worker also had a fatal heart attack. In recent years, almost half of all workplace deaths were caused by chronic illnesses, such as heart or lung disease. So far, only one workplace death resulted from a chronic illness this year. Keeping workplaces safe is a joint effort between government, employers and employees. Government investigates injuries and illnesses, enforces the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and promotes safe work practices. It works closely with the Workers’ Compensation Board, safety organizations and industry safety associations across the province. Employers and employees likely have the greatest impact on workplace safety because they usually have an intimate knowledge of the work they do, and the materials and practices that are used. “Employers and employees need to remain vigilant to the risks facing them at work,” said Jim LeBlanc, executive director, Occupational Health and Safety division. “In so many investigations, we find that most injuries could have been avoided if more consideration had been given to the task and how it was to be done.”last_img read more

More Spaces for Early Intensive Behavioural Analysis Program

first_imgChildren with autism preparing to start school in 2016 at age six will benefit from the Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention program. In September government will add between 20 and 25 new spaces in the program, creating a total of 110 spaces. This means 110 children will be able to receive the program each year. Government will now be investing a total of $10 million each year in this program. “Before, our daughter would enter a crowded room, go to a corner and put her fingers in her ears. Now she walks in and wants to be the centre of attention,” said Lori Fancy, whose six-year-old daughter finished the program in May 2014, and started school the following September. “If I had to do it all again, I would do it in a heartbeat. On the first day of school, she was the first one in line and overall she’s transitioned into school seamlessly.” There are currently 25 children on the waitlist who will enter school at age six in 2016. “As parents, we all want what’s best for our children. For children with autism, this program provides the best start possible before they begin school,” said Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine. “I recognize it can be a difficult choice for some families to delay school entry, but this program provides valuable skills that will better prepare these children for the learning environment at school.” Last fall, Mr. Glavine appointed an expert panel to review the program to ensure the province was providing the best treatment possible to children with autism before they start school. The panel concluded that the program is effective in helping children develop communications skills, follow directions, pay attention and control their emotions. These skills are often very weak or non-existent for children with autism, and they are important for success at school. The Early Intensive Behavioural Intervention program began in 2005, to help children with autism get treatment before they entered school. At the time, about one in 150 people were diagnosed with autism, according to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. 39th Provincial 4H Show in Bible Hill

first_imgNova Scotia 4-H members will be in Bible Hill, Friday, Sept. 30 to Sunday, Oct. 2, for the province’s 39th annual 4-H Show at the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Grounds. The event is the largest 4-H show in Canada with 40 projects, 90 classes, and 2,400 entries expected to be displayed this year. Admission is free for the public. “The annual show is a wonderful display of the hard work and talent of 4-H members across the province,” said Agriculture Minister Keith Colwell. “I wish all the participants in this year’s show success.” 4-H members, ages nine to 21-years-old, qualify to compete at the event after achieving top honours for their life skills or livestock projects at local exhibitions. Highlights this year include livestock classes, market animal auctions, a fashion show, dog obedience and handling trials, tug-of-war, a cake decorating competition, grand champion showmanship class, and dairy and beef cattle selections for the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. 4-H alumni, like 18-year-old Ian MacLellan of the West River 4-H Club in Antigonish County, see the show as an important part of their overall experience as members. “In my nine years with 4-H, I have learned about leadership, teamwork, work ethic, determination and so many other skills that I will hold with me for the rest of my life,” said Mr. MacLellan. “The feeling you get when you have the opportunity to display the work that you have put into your projects all year, to people from across the province, truly makes the effort worth it. “Whether you are there with a project, a competition, hosting, or supporting a club member, there is always time to connect and build relationships with like-minded people, and industry partners.” Each year a different county or region hosts the 4-H show. New EHS LifeFlight Helicopters In Service

first_img “It is a great privilege for our medical and aviation teams to serve Nova Scotians,” said Steve Crocker, critical care paramedic, LifeFlight. “The new upgrades will better support everyone on the aircraft to provide the high-quality critical care people have come to expect from LifeFlight.” Earlier this year, government announced it had reached an agreement with Canadian Helicopters Limited to outfit and operate two new air ambulance helicopters. The 15-year contract is valued at $105 million. Nova Scotia is a Canadian leader in emergency health services, and has been recognized by Sikorsky for 20 years and 17,000 hours of accident-free medical services with EHS LifeFlight. The new helicopters began service on Dec. 15. Two new medical helicopters are now in service and able to land on hospital helipads. “EHS LifeFlight is a vital part of Nova Scotia’s emergency medical services and provides critical care to people all over the Maritimes,” said Health and Wellness Minister Randy Delorey. “For EHS LifeFlight, time matters. These new helicopters can get patients to hospital faster and they have important equipment available to critical care teams when they need it most.” LifeFlight Tango and LifeFlight November are Sikorsky S-76 C+ aircraft with innovative technology that exceeds any emergency medical aircraft in use in Canada today. They have been specifically designed, inside and out, for use by Nova Scotia’s critical care teams. EHS LifeFlight responds to between 700 and 800 calls a year. With two helicopters, LifeFlight will be able to respond more often because there will be minimal downtime for maintenance and scheduled repairs. The new helicopters feature: state-of-the-art navigation and communication systems that improve safety, including automatic voice alerts, surveillance, and real-time Environment Canada weather feed – the first of its kind in Canada back-up life-saving equipment, like oxygen outlets and regulators, and a back-up generator to fuel that equipment a night vision goggle-compatible cockpit climate control that provides a better environment for the patient and crew.last_img read more

Performance Audit Report Released

first_imgAuditor General Michael Pickup issued a special performance audit report today, Jan. 15. The report contains the findings from his audit work at the Department of Internal Services related to the April 2018 privacy breach of the freedom of information access website that resulted in the inappropriate disclosure of personal information. The purpose of this performance audit was to assess the implementation of the province’s new website and supporting system to handle freedom of information requests. The auditor general found significant weaknesses in the risk management and project management processes used to implement and test the new website and supporting software, leading to the eventual privacy breach and inappropriate disclosure of personal information. Risk management processes were inadequate, with many basic steps not completed. Despite many warning signs, including the fact Nova Scotia was to be the first jurisdiction in the world to implement the new website and software together, the department considered the entire project low risk. This helped lead to many relatively obvious and potentially unacceptable risks not being identified or addressed. In addition, the overall project management was poor, with many key steps incomplete and key contract components not documented. “The April privacy breach is a very clear example of what can happen when government does not protect the personal information entrusted to it by the people of Nova Scotia,” said Mr. Pickup. “The inappropriate disclosure of personal information is actually not surprising given the extent of the failures found during our audit.” The report contains five recommendations which have all been accepted by government. More bodies found as Hungary lifts sunken tourist boat from river

first_imgBudapest: Hungarian police recovered more bodies on Tuesday as they lifted a sightseeing boat that sank in the river Danube in Budapest last month in an accident that has claimed at least 24 lives. Police were seen removing another four bodies from the vessel while four people are still missing about two weeks after the tragedy, the worst such incident in Hungary in 75 years. The lifting operation began at around 6 am (0400 GMT) and six hours later the Mermaid tourist boat was almost entirely out of the water. Several dozen rescue workers could be seen taking part in the operation, including members of a team sent from South Korea. Those on board included a six-year-old girl travelling with her mother and grandparents, and the Mermaid’s Hungarian captain. At one point, one member of the rescue crew fell into the fast-flowing water and had to be rescued after almost being swept away. Divers have periodically been entering the vessel to search the bodies of any victims still inside. Damage was visible to the rear part of the Mermaid where the collision occurred. Since the accident divers had been unable to enter the submerged boat due to the strong current in a river swollen from weeks of rain. UK economys worst month since Brexit vote

Noida Authority to plant over 187 lakh saplings on Independence Day

PCB decides not to renew coach Mickey Arthurs contract

Ayodhya dispute Rajeev Dhavan objects to daily hearings

Talks positive Zomato Gold still a bone of contention NRAI

first_imgNew Delhi: As the ongoing tussle between the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) and online food aggregators as well as delivery platforms enters a settlement stage, Zomato Gold is still proving to be a bone of contention, a top NRAI executive said on Monday. The restaurants’ trade body met Swiggy and Zomato last week and had constructive talks, barring any significant progress on the Zomato Gold programme. “The NRAI remains steadfast in its belief that Zomato Gold in its current form is not acceptable in either dine-in or delivery segment. This move was appreciated by the NRAI,” Anurag Katriar, President of NRAI, said in a statement. A Zomato spokesperson said that it continues to have discussions with the NRAI on all issues faced by the industry and “is focused on providing solutions sustainable for all participants”. The restaurant’s trade body held its second meeting with both the key delivery aggregators, Swiggy and Zomato on September 13. These were follow-up meetings after the NRAI flagged eight critical issues pertaining to the online delivery space which are crippling this vertical of the food service industry. “The follow-up meetings on the eight core issues were largely positive and talks have progressed well so far. Both aggregators have presented concrete roadmap and apprised the NRAI core team of the progress made thus far,” informed Katriar. The association said since the desired changes are fairly large and significant, their total resolution may take some time. The newly-appointed NRAI managing committee is slated to meet this week in Mumbai to deliberate upon the progress made and subsequently decide the next course of action.
