A native of Kilmacrennan, John is the son of the late Councillor Eddie O’Donnell and his wife Anne. A popular figure among young and old, O’Donnell used the launch to outline his vision for the people of Donegal. His campaign centres on addressing key areas which he feels successive governments have neglected. Election candidate John O’DonnellThese include facilitating business and entrepreneurship, protecting people and services, creating a viable future for farmers, developing tourism and infrastructure, restoring and renewing communities and empowering young people through education, training and employment.Chairing proceedings for the evening was Letterkenny based solicitor, Daireann Gibson.John’s mother, former councillor Anne O’Donnell, addressed the crowd in a touching tribute to both her late husband and her son.John also received a resounding endorsement from his uncle Daniel O’Donnell, (a brother of the late Councillor Eddie O’Donnell), who offered his nephew his full support for the campaign. Commenting on the success of the launch, John O’Donnell said: “I’m running as an Independent because I’m disappointed by the way successive governments have neglected and ignored the citizens they represent.“And judging by the crowd that came to the launch – young and old from all walks of life – there are a lot of people out there who share my frustration. I’m now looking forward to getting on the campaign trail, to meeting the electorate and finding out what they need from me. Our mobile office will visit your town in the coming weeks and we want to hear from you“.A past pupil of Kilmacrennan N.S. and Mulroy College (formerly Milford Vocational School), John grew up in a busy political household, watching his parents work tirelessly for their constituents. This grounding in political life gave him a unique insight into the importance of strong political representation at a local level and he wants to see a return to an open door policy for constituents.Coupled with this, O’Donnell has a wealth of national and international business experience that belies the fact that he is still only in his early 30’s. He now plans to bring this drive, energy and enthusiasm to the political sphere – something, he believes, is severely lacking.
