first_imgBY EMMET RUSHE: Modern life can be both a blessing and a curse.Everything has been upgraded to easy-to-use machines or appliances, making life easier in many ways, but there is a downside.Technology tends to reduce our opportunities to be physically active throughout the day, which has led to widespread weight gain and increase in diseases. Regular physical activity plays an important role in maintaining a healthy body weight and promoting good health. The more we move, the more muscles we use, and the more calories we burn. It’s important to note that even small amounts of physical activity can provide positive health benefits. It may not always be possible to get a workout in from week to week, so being physically active throughout the day can provide numerous health and weight benefits. Make physical activity part of your daily journey to work. This may not always be possible for everyone especially if you live several miles away from your work. However, if you live in the town in which you work, you can save yourself a lot of time being stuck in traffic and get yourself some exercise while you are at it.There are cycle-to-work schemes that you can avail of or you could just walk! (crazy, I know…)Walk or cycle to the shopsMost of us make several visits to a shop or local supermarket each day, whether it’s for a morning coffee or to get something for lunch or dinner on your way home. These are usually short journeys in the car which could be replaced with either walking or cycling. You are getting what you need and getting some physical activity at the same time.Make time for frequent standing breaks throughout your day. Many companies are beginning to understand the negative health consequences of sitting for too long.Take frequent standing breaks by standing to perform tasks like making phone calls, typing out a text or checking your email on a mobile device.Use your coffee break wiselyIf possible, walk to another coffee shop instead of the canteen in your work.Invite a colleague or two so that you can have a work-related conversation during the trip.Take the stairs. Some of you may not know this, but every building has these things called ‘stairs’.They are what we used to use before the invention of the elevator.Taking the stairs is an easy way to get some physical activity during your day.Not only are you getting some cardio, but you are also gaining leg strength at the same time.Park a little further from your destination. Parking further from the front of the shops or your work serves two benefits; You get more activity by walking farther to your destination and it is easier to leave when you are parked closer to the exit, which is a bonus when the shops are busy or at home time at work.Stay active. How many times have you gone to a park and seen parents sitting on a bench hunched over their phone while their kids are playing in the playground? Why not join in with them? Not only will you be getting your exercise in, but your kids will appreciate it a lot more than watching you on your phone.Do Housework. No, this is not a joke.Housework is actually a good way to get your physical activity in, especially if you put some effort into it.You can get some cardio, flexibility from all the reaching and bending and some strength from the lifting and carrying. It may not seem like taking the stairs or parking further away would make a big difference, but adding little bouts of physical activity to your day can help you burn additional calories and improve your health.Anything you do that increases physical activity can only be a good thing.#TrainSmartTo keep up to date with fitness and nutrition tips, be sure to follow me through the link below.https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rushe-Fitness/120518884715118EMMET RUSHE: HOW TO BE MORE ACTIVE THROUGHOUT THE DAY was last modified: June 22nd, 2015 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:emmet rushefitness columnlast_img
