The boost also took place as the firm invested €8.16 billion (US$8.8 billion) all in all in 2019, up 32% on 2018.At 41%, nearly half of every euro spent by Iberdrola in 2019 went into renewables, which bagged €3.34 billion (US$3.63 billion) from the utility. first_imgEx-Liverpool goalkeeper James: Pickford still England’s bestby Paul Vegas14 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveFormer Liverpool goalkeeper David James says Jordan Pickford is the “best” English goalkeeper ahead of their upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers.Everton keeper Pickford is set to add to his 21 caps for the national side this week as England take on Czech Republic and Bulgaria on away soil.”I’m a fan of Jordan,” James said. “Looking at the Premier League clubs now I think there’s quite a few young English goalkeepers coming through but I still think he is the best about at the moment.”I like him, he’s confident. It will be interesting to see how his development goes.”Having had such a meteoric rise to the England position and shoring up that no.1 spot, there’s going to be a lull at some point. But he’s decent and he’s a good lad. When I’ve spoken to him he’s very focused, which is obviously very important.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Rio Tinto investing 250 million to extend life of Vaudreuil alumina refinery

first_imgSAGUENAY, Qc – Rio Tinto says it’s investing $250 million in its Vaudreuil alumina refinery in Quebec to extend the life of the operation past 2022.The company says work on the refinery, located in the Saguenay region of the province, will include construction of a filtration plant and optimization at a site to manage bauxite residue. The residue, also known as red mud, is what’s left over after extracting the alumina from the bauxite and can include small amounts of toxic metals like arsenic and lead.Rio Tinto says it’s also looking to identify ways of getting value out of the residue, which in general is mostly made up of iron oxide, titanium dioxide, silicon oxide, and undissolved alumina. The company says the Vaudreuil refinery, built in 1936, supports more than 1,000 jobs and generates about $135 million in annual regional economic benefits. The investment announcement in the Vaudreuil refinery comes as a strike continues at the ABI aluminum smelter in Quebec, 75 per cent owned by Alcoa and 25 per cent by Rio Tinto.last_img read more

Daimler CEO Zetsche to step down early succeeded by insider

first_imgFRANKFURT – Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, who unwound a troubled merger with Chrysler Corporation and led the German automaker to a string of record profits, will hand off next year to Ola Kallenius, a longtime insider who heads vehicle development for the Mercedes-Benz brand. The Stuttgart-based company said Wednesday that the change will take place in May and that Zetsche, 65, would be nominated to become head of the board in 2021 after the term expires for the current chairman, Manfred Bischoff.Zetsche’s latest three-year contract was to end in December 2019 and Kallenius had figured prominently in speculation about who would succeed him.Chairman Bischoff said that by nominating Zetsche early for the top board of directors post, “we are ensuring continuity for the sustained success of Daimler AG.”“In Ola Kallenius, we are appointing a recognized, internationally experienced and successful Daimler executive,” he said. The 49-year-old Kallenius, who was born in Vastervik, Sweden and still holds a Swedish passport, has headed group research and vehicle development for the key Mercedes-Benz luxury car division since the start of 2017. He worked as a manager in corporate controlling in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the 1990s.He is now slated to take over Zetsche’s dual mandate as both head of the entire company and the Mercedes division. The company also makes trucks and buses and provides financial services.Kallenius’ job is to be filled by Markus Schaefer, head of production and supply chain executive at Mercedes.Zetsche became CEO of what was then DaimlerChrysler AG in 2006. A smooth public speaker, he appeared for a time in U.S. television commercials as “Dr. Z,” ending his explanations of how German technology helped Chrysler brand vehicles with a cheery “auf wiedersehen.”Asked what Zetsche would do after Kallenius takes over, a company spokesman said only that Zetsche remains under contract until the end of 2019. He is also slated to take over as board chairman of travel group TUI on Oct. 1.His legacy includes leading Daimler out of its troubled 1998 merger with Chrysler, and subsequently racking up consecutive years of record sales and profits. The company also faces several headwinds, however. It is under scrutiny by the U.S. Justice Department and German authorities in connection with possible diesel emissions violations. And it issued a profit warning in June citing the U.S.-China trade dispute, which will hit some of its cars made in the U.S. and imported into China with new import taxes. The company is moving toward a strategic overhaul that would split Daimler into three divisions.last_img read more
