Empathy, lifes experiences define ones success: Nadella

first_imgNew Delhi, Nov 7 (PTI) Empathy and learning from lifes experiences are mantras that Microsofts India-born CEO Satya Nadella feels play a crucial role in determining the success of individuals and organisations. The tech titan is in India on a two-day visit to promote his book Hit Refresh. In a free-wheeling chat with former cricketer Anil Kumble, Nadella talked about his love for cricket, the importance of empathy and its significance in personal and professional lives.Nadella, 50, described how the birth of his son, Zain, (who was born with severe cerebral palsy) had a “deep impact” on him and was his Hit Refresh moment. He recounted that he was 29 when he and his wife, Anupama, had their first child. He reminisced being both excited and nervous at that time, and struggling thereafter to come to terms with their sons condition.”…for the first multiple years I struggled with it…it was only in watching Anu (his wife) and what came much more naturally to her…seeing her giving him the best shot is when I realised that…I needed to step up as a parent,” he said in a chat with former cricketer Anil Kumble. The episode — which Nadella described as a defining monment in his life — also shaped him into the leader he is today.A person is a culmination and combination of ones life experiences, Nadella said adding that he had also come to deeply appreciate the value of empathy in life and workplace.”There is no way we are going to succeed in something like that if we dont have deep sense of empathy. I think of empathy as not just as something nice to have, but core to innovation agenda in a company,” he added.advertisementNadella also spoke about his love for cricket and the lessons he learnt from the sport that are relevant to a corporate boardroom as well.He cited the example of the team he was a part of, and how he learnt that while it is important to compete aggressively and with passion, it is also critical for a leader to put the team first. StealthGas Offloads Three LPG Tankers

first_imgzoomImage Courtesy: StealthGas LPG shipping company StealthGas has started the year with the sale of three second-hand ships cashing in USD 17 million. The ships in question are the 2006-built Gas Enchanted, which has already been delivered to its new owners, and  1998-built Gas Legacy and 1996-built Gas Evoluzione, scheduled for deliveries in the third quarter of 2018.“More evidence that values are firming even on older vessels was provided by these sales, as we sold the Gas Legacy at 5.6 times demolition value and the Gas Evoluzione at 4.2 times demolition value,” Michael Jolliffe, StealthGas’ Board Chairman, said. The company has seven more ships older than 20 years which are also sale candidates. The sale of older tonnage coincides with the delivery of the last 22,000 cbm semi-refrigerated newbuild LPG, which concluded the company’s 26-strong newbuilding program.StealthGas ended the first quarter of 2018 with a net loss of USD 5.8 million, compared to a net income of USD 2 million for the three months ended March 31, 2017.Revenues for the period amounted to USD 39.7 million, an increase of 4.2 pct year-on-year, mainly due to improved market conditions in the small LPG segment.Jolliffe said that the company’s net revenue and profitability were affected by the rise in oil prices which increased voyage costs and LIBOR rates. In addition, slower spot market for LPG around Chinese New Year and weak earnings of the company’s tankers led to lower than anticipated margins. The results were are also impacted by costs related to the delivery and commencement of trading for new vessels in the fleet as well as significant ballasting costs on a number of vessels.During the past three months, the company concluded ten new time charter contracts and contract extensions.“We also chartered in an LPG vessel from a third-party to take advantage of this positive market momentum. What I would like to note is that we have 19 vessels finishing their period contracts in the period from this month until December 2018 and they will most likely be chartered at improved rates, leveraging our company’s revenue,” Harry Vafias, Chief Executive Officer of StealthGas, said in a conference call.“We continue to observe that our core market’s fundamentals have improved as rates for small LPG carriers are still on the rise, and the forecast is that they will continue to do so at least for the next couple of years,” Joliffe said.“Taking this into account, our main focus is to take advantage of this positive market momentum to the fullest and calibrate our fleet management strategy so as to increase our profitability. We have so far in the second quarter of 2018 reduced our commercial idle days by about 90% compared to the first quarter of this year. With an asset base in excess of USD 1 billion, low leverage and ideal demand and supply conditions, combined with improving freight rates, gives reason for optimism for the future.”last_img read more

Facebook launches artificial intelligence research lab in Montreal

first_imgMONTREAL – Facebook has become the latest technology company to dig into Montreal’s burgeoning artificial intelligence sector, announcing the opening of a research lab in the city Friday. The lab, known as FAIR Montreal, is headed by Joelle Pineau, a professor in McGill University’s computer science department and co-director of Reasoning and Learning Lab.The social media giant follows Google and Microsoft in establishing AI roots in Montreal. The lab is open and ready for business, with the first researchers already setting up shop in a new building.Pineau finished her degree in the United States and came back to Montreal against the advice of some of her American colleagues, who felt it would hinder her ability to do world-class research. She said she’s proven them wrong and added she hopes the new lab will give talented researchers in the field another option to stay put.“For many years, I’ve seen a steady stream of talented AI researchers … leaving my lab but also leaving our country,” Pineau told dignitaries, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.“I hope that some of the students who are here today will find an opportunity that matches their interest and their talent.”The Montreal lab will employ 10 researchers to begin, with the aim of tripling that number in the coming year. That would put it on par with three other Facebook hubs currently based in New York City, Paris and Menlo Park, Calif., and serve as recognition that Montreal has quickly developed a concentration of expertise in the area of artificial intelligence.Apart from the lab, Facebook said it intends to invest $7 million in the city’s AI community to fund research and students.Yoshua Bengio, a computer science professor at Universite de Montreal and an AI researcher, says Facebook is not just applying artificial intelligence but is also creating new science.“Facebook and a few other companies have been really contributing to the best science that is happening in our field in the last few years,” Bengio said. “This is unusual. It’s not what you usually see in industry.“But AI’s moving so fast and the importance of having the best people in one’s company is so critical.”Trudeau was joined by Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre and Quebec’s innovation minister, Dominque Anglade.Speaking at his alma mater, Trudeau said generations of innovators have found inspiration in Montreal and Canada.“So it should come as no surprise that more tech giants are choosing our cities as their homes away from home,” he said.Outside the event, a large crowd of mostly students gathered for a chance to meet with Trudeau in his hometown.“You think he’ll sign my textbook?,” one McGill student quipped as she and dozens others patiently waited for the prime minister to emerge.last_img read more

Daimler CEO Zetsche to step down early succeeded by insider

first_imgFRANKFURT – Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche, who unwound a troubled merger with Chrysler Corporation and led the German automaker to a string of record profits, will hand off next year to Ola Kallenius, a longtime insider who heads vehicle development for the Mercedes-Benz brand. The Stuttgart-based company said Wednesday that the change will take place in May and that Zetsche, 65, would be nominated to become head of the board in 2021 after the term expires for the current chairman, Manfred Bischoff.Zetsche’s latest three-year contract was to end in December 2019 and Kallenius had figured prominently in speculation about who would succeed him.Chairman Bischoff said that by nominating Zetsche early for the top board of directors post, “we are ensuring continuity for the sustained success of Daimler AG.”“In Ola Kallenius, we are appointing a recognized, internationally experienced and successful Daimler executive,” he said. The 49-year-old Kallenius, who was born in Vastervik, Sweden and still holds a Swedish passport, has headed group research and vehicle development for the key Mercedes-Benz luxury car division since the start of 2017. He worked as a manager in corporate controlling in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in the 1990s.He is now slated to take over Zetsche’s dual mandate as both head of the entire company and the Mercedes division. The company also makes trucks and buses and provides financial services.Kallenius’ job is to be filled by Markus Schaefer, head of production and supply chain executive at Mercedes.Zetsche became CEO of what was then DaimlerChrysler AG in 2006. A smooth public speaker, he appeared for a time in U.S. television commercials as “Dr. Z,” ending his explanations of how German technology helped Chrysler brand vehicles with a cheery “auf wiedersehen.”Asked what Zetsche would do after Kallenius takes over, a company spokesman said only that Zetsche remains under contract until the end of 2019. He is also slated to take over as board chairman of travel group TUI on Oct. 1.His legacy includes leading Daimler out of its troubled 1998 merger with Chrysler, and subsequently racking up consecutive years of record sales and profits. The company also faces several headwinds, however. It is under scrutiny by the U.S. Justice Department and German authorities in connection with possible diesel emissions violations. And it issued a profit warning in June citing the U.S.-China trade dispute, which will hit some of its cars made in the U.S. and imported into China with new import taxes. The company is moving toward a strategic overhaul that would split Daimler into three divisions.last_img read more
