Toronto market drags as US stocks mostly push higher loonie down

first_imgTORONTO – Rallying oil prices and a rising energy sector weren’t enough to keep Canada’s main stock index out of the red Thursday, as U.S. stocks mostly closed higher amid a pullback in bond yields. The S&P/TSX composite index was down 15.84 points to 15,508.17, in a largely broad-based decline that included the influential gold and financials sectors.Investors were relieved to see the yield on U.S. 10-year Treasury notes fall to 2.92 per cent from Wednesday, when it climbed to 2.95 per cent — the highest level since January 2014. Higher yields generally hurt stock prices by making bonds more appealing to investors. The spike in bond yields Wednesday came after the Federal Reserve’s minutes from its January policy meeting showed bullish sentiment among policy-makers, confirming their intention to raise interest rates this year.In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 164.70 points to 24,962.48. The S&P 500 index added 2.63 points to 2,703.96 and the Nasdaq composite index was down 8.14 points to 7,210.09.“For the most part we’re seeing a lot of renewed appetite for risk,” said Candice Bangsund, a vice-president and portfolio manager at Fiera Capital in Montreal.“A lot of that was that bond yields did come off today, particularly after the strong back up we saw earlier this week. So I think there was a little bit of relief for the equity markets.”In currency markets, the loonie continued its flight south as the Canadian dollar closed at an average trading value of 78.68 cents US, down 0.24 of a U.S. cent. The currency is down more than a penny so far this week.“We saw weakness on the back of the weaker-than-expected retail sales report, so the Canadian dollar fell on that news,” said Bangsund.Statistics Canada reported Thursday that retail sales fell 0.8 per cent in December to $49.6 billion, as gains in new car sales were more than offset by lower sales at electronics and appliance stores and general merchandise retailers. On the Canadian corporate front, shares of Loblaw Companies Ltd. were down $1.15, or 1.76 per cent, to $64.16 after the grocer reported a drop in its fourth-quarter profit due to a $189-million charge related to the announcement of its PC Optimum loyalty rewards program and the fallout from its admission of participation in an alleged industry-wide price-fixing conspiracy.Meanwhile, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce kicked off banks’ earnings season after it reported first-quarter net income of $1.33 million — down 5.6 per cent from the same period a year ago but up more than 22 per cent on an adjusted basis, beating expectations. In commodities news, the April crude contract climbed US$1.09 to US$62.77 per barrel and the April natural gas contract was down one cent at US$2.68 per mmBTU.The April gold contract added 60 cents to US$1,332.70 an ounce and the March copper contract was up three cents at US$3.24 a pound.– With a file from The Associated Press.Companies in this story: (TSX:L, TSX:CM)last_img read more

Business Highlights

first_img___The stock market starts off 2019 with more turbulenceNEW YORK (AP) — Stocks finish the first trading day of 2019 with small gains as a roller-coaster ride continues for the market. Indexes fell sharply in early trading following more disappointing economic news from China, then recovered in the afternoon. The market is coming off its worst annual drop in a decade as investors worry about slowing global economic growth and a trade fight between the U.S. and China. Energy companies rose as oil prices climbed, but health care companies fell.___Why slowing economies could prod US and China to reach dealWASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration and China are facing growing pressure to blink in their six-month stare-down over trade because of jittery markets and portents of economic weakness. The import taxes the two sides have imposed on hundreds of billions of each other’s goods — and the threat of more to come — have heightened anxiety on each side of the Pacific. The longer their trade war lasts, the longer companies and consumers will feel the pain of higher-priced imports and exports.___Apple sees further weakness in iPhone salesSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple warns that disappointing iPhone sales will cause a significant drop in its revenue over the crucial holiday season compared to earlier projections. CEO Tim Cook made the announcement after the market closed Wednesday. Investors have been dumping Apple shares amid signs that the latest iPhone models weren’t living up to expectations. Apple now expects revenue of $84 billion for its past quarter, down from its projected range of $89 billion to $93 billion.___Tesla cuts prices as 4Q deliveries miss analysts’ estimatesDETROIT (AP) — Shares of electric car and solar panel maker Tesla Inc. tumbled Wednesday after the company cut vehicle prices by $2,000 and announced fourth-quarter sales figures that fell short of Wall Street estimates. The company delivered over 245,000 electric cars and SUVs last year, nearly as many as all previous years combined. But fourth-quarter deliveries of 90,700 were below analyst estimates.___Netflix’s ‘Bird Box’ success gets Hollywood cluckingSAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Netflix has provided the movie industry with an unprecedented peek at how a newly released film is faring on its service as competition for creative talent intensifies and its once-soaring stock sinks. The company lifted the tightly sealed lid on its viewership numbers in a recent tweet that disclosed 45 million subscriber accounts had watched the thriller “Bird Box” during its first seven days on the service. That is Netflix’s biggest first-week success in movies.___Expect 2019 to be quiet in Congress — for small businessNEW YORK (AP) — Small business issues often win bipartisan support on Capitol Hill, but given the divisions in the incoming 116th Congress, advocates for companies have low expectations. A newly Democratic House, a Senate that remains in Republican hands and ongoing investigations of the Trump White House and campaign are expected to be obstacles to much small business-related work getting done. Some advocates say business owners will see more activity on their behalf in their state governments.___Plunge in oil prices threatens Iraq’s postwar recoveryBAGHDAD (AP) — The latest plunge in oil prices has dealt a heavy blow to Iraq’s stagnating economy, threatening the new government’s ability to rebuild after the devastating war with the Islamic State group and provide basic services to areas roiled by recent protests. Brent crude oil briefly rose above $85 a barrel in October but has since plummeted to less than $55 a barrel — a nightmare for a country like Iraq that derives 95 per cent of its revenue from oil exports.___Netflix criticized for yanking comedian’s episode in SaudiNEW YORK (AP) — Netflix is facing criticism for pulling an episode from viewing in Saudi Arabia of American comedian Hasan Minhaj’s “Patriot Act” that criticized the kingdom’s crown prince. Minhaj used his second episode to lambast the prince over the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi and the Saudi-led war in Yemen. But Netflix says the episode was removed from the kingdom as a result of a legal request from authorities and not due to its content.___Department store executive Blake Nordstrom dies at 58NEW YORK (AP) — Blake Nordstrom, who led the upscale department store chain Nordstrom as co-president with his brothers Erik and Peter, has died. He was 58. The Seattle-based company did not disclose the cause of death, saying Nordstrom passed away early Wednesday unexpectedly. Last month, Nordstrom said that he had been diagnosed with lymphoma, but that his cancer was treatable.___The S&P 500 index finished with a gain of 3.18 points, or 0.1 per cent, at 2,510.03, while the Dow industrials rose 18.78 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 23,346.24. The Nasdaq composite climbed 30.66 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 6,665.94. The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks rose 7.35 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 1,355.91.Benchmark U.S. crude jumped 2.5 per cent to $46.54 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, used to price international oils, rose 2.1 per cent to $54.91 per barrel in London. Wholesale gasoline rose 1.8 per cent to $1.33 a gallon. Heating oil gained 1.3 per cent to $1.70 a gallon. Natural gas rose 0.6 per cent to $2.96 per 1,000 cubic feet. The Associated Presslast_img read more

Top recruit Amir Williams commits to Mattas class of 2015

A 93-75 win wasn’t the only victory the Ohio State men’s basketball team achieved over Florida this week. The Buckeyes also beat out the Gators for one of the top center prospects in the country. Amir Williams, a 6-foot-10-inch center from Country Day High School in Detroit, announced Wednesday his decision to play college basketball for coach Thad Matta and the Buckeyes. Williams, who Rivals.com ranks as the seventh-best center in the country, waited until near the end of the signing period to choose OSU over  Florida, Duke and Pittsburgh. “He felt that it was closer to home,” said Kurt Keener, Williams’ high school coach. “Though more than anything else, he felt that the style of play at Ohio State, and the success they’ve had with preparing guys with going from college to the pro ranks, was what ultimately had him decide on the Buckeyes.” Country Day has produced some high-caliber basketball players, including Chris Webber and Shane Battier. Keener said Williams is solid defensively and has a nice mid-range game but still needs to work on his overall offensive game. “There’s things that you can’t coach in a player. You can’t coach somebody to be 6-foot-10 or 6-foot-11. You can’t coach their passion for the game or their intensity. He has those things,” Keener said. “The things he has to work on, whether it be the footwork or the pump fakes, all of those things are very much teachable things. If he’s healthy and he listens and learns, I could see him being an All-Big Ten player with a chance to play in the NBA someday.” read more
