Bale reveals what he said to Karius after Champions League final goal

first_img Bale’s second goal for Real Madrid against Liverpool left Karius devastated Bale went over to console his opponent at the final whistle Gareth Bale was Real Madrid’s hero back in May as the club won a third successive Champions League trophy, denying Liverpool a chance of glory.Real won 3-1 and while the forward’s first effort – an incredible scissor kick – was lauded, his second led to harsh words for Loris Karius, the Reds goalkeeper. But it wasn’t the easiest shot to save, says Bale. 2 “I always try to put a bit of wobble on the ball,’ he told the Mail. “It’s the same with free-kicks. You try to make it more difficult because if it doesn’t go in the corner I always give them a problem if it’s right down their throat,” he added before revealing he did console the Liverpool goalkeeper.“I just said: ‘Keep your head up,’” before pointing out this is just a part of football. “Mistakes happen. It’s just unfortunate it’s in a final. Yes, I suppose it’s not quite as bad as it looked but I suppose he should save it.” On the goal that wowed everyone he described his thought process between Marcelo’s cross and his decision to go for the acrobatic approach: “You could opt to take the ball down and do something then, but you know you are in a situation where if you’re going to get closed down you have to try something.“You certainly don’t really think about looking stupid. If you don’t try things, things never happen. If you have time to think about it, it doesn’t come off. It’s when you have to make those reaction decisions that you normally tend to get the best results.“I knew exactly where the ball went and you can see in the video my head turns to look exactly where the ball is going. As soon as I hit it I knew it was good.”The goal, as good as it was, didn’t even make UEFA’s goal of the Season shortlist. “I don’t know how it wasn’t on that list!” he said. “I want to know who is on the panel because they want to be sacked,” he joked. Probably.Bale is now more crucial to Real than ever following Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit and has started the league season with three goals in four games as well as being credited with two assists. For Karius, though, the game was his last competitive one in a Liverpool shirt. Alisson was brought in from Roma and the German was sent to Turkish club Besiktas on a two-year loan. 2last_img read more
