End the season with the Old Christmas event

first_imgLatest Stories Remember America’s heroes on Memorial Day Following the hustle and bustle of Christmas, there’s the quiet, peaceful time that is known as Old Christmas. On that day, so long ago, the Wise Men finally arrived to worship the Christ Child. Each year at 6 p.m. on Old Christmas Day, Jan. 6, Brundidge United Methodist Church hosts an Old Christmas Service of Scriptures and Songs at historic Clay Hill Church. The service is non-denominational and everyone is invited. Old Christmas is not a widespread celebration, as such, in America today. Mountain folks and plain folks celebrate Old Christmas but, other than that, the celebrations are few and far between. However, the tradition has become a part of the Christmas “story” in Pike County said Annette Bryan, a member of the Old Christmas committee.“Old Christmas at Clay Hill is celebrated in much the same way as it was 100 years ago,” Bryan said. “It is a lamplight service and the church is decorated with pine, cedar and holly. The music is played on acoustic instruments and the congregation is invited to join in the singing of the carols of Christmas as the stories of both the birth of the Christ Child and the arrival of the Wise Men are being told through the scriptures. The service ends with the passing of the light of peace.”Don Renfroe has participated in the Old Christmas service for more than a decade as a member of the congregation and as one of the Wise Men. PSG win again but tensions simmer between Neymar, Cavani

first_img– ‘Everything is fine’ –Earlier in Sunday’s game, the duo disagreed over who should take a free-kick with the match still goalless. Dani Alves intervened to give his compatriot the ball on that occasion, and Neymar’s strike was saved.“They are two great players. They want to score goals. There are no problems between them, everything is fine,” insisted PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe. Most coaches would envy the embarrassment of riches at Emery’s disposal. The ‘MCN’ front line of Mbappe, Cavani and Neymar has cost the capital club 466 million euros ($557 million, £411 million) but now the coach has to somehow keep them all happy.Cavani scored a remarkable 49 goals in all competitions last season and already has nine this season — it would have been 10 had the opener against Lyon not been credited as a Marcelo own goal. But Cavani, who previously lived in the shadow of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has seen PSG commit the two biggest transfer fees in history to sign Neymar and Mbappe. And 222 million-euro man Neymar has come to Paris to be the main man after spending four years in Lionel Messi’s shadow at Barcelona.“This victory has exposed tensions between Neymar and Cavani,” said sports daily L’Equipe on its front page on Monday. The ‘MCN’ scored eight goals between them in their first two matches together against Metz (5-1) and Celtic (5-0), but Sunday was less encouraging.Cavani saw very little of the ball, while Neymar and Mbappe were relatively subdued, even if they combined to force PSG’s second on the night, a Jeremy Morel own goal.Julian Draxler, a 40 million-euro signing from Wolfsburg in January, was also shoehorned into the team on Sunday but overloading the side with attacking stars is to the detriment of the overall balance.PSG have not slipped up yet, but Sunday’s game showed that Emery has plenty on his plate. Cavani, Mbappe and NeymarParis, France | AFP |  Paris Saint-Germain kept their perfect start to the season going on Sunday, but the 2-0 win over Lyon also laid bare certain tensions in their all-star front line.PSG were leading 1-0 at the Parc des Princes when they won a penalty with 10 minutes remaining for a foul on Kylian Mbappe, making his home debut.Having already scored three times from the spot this season, Edinson Cavani assumed the responsibility would once again be his.Neymar tried to get the ball from the Uruguayan but it was Cavani who eventually took it. And his effort was brilliantly saved, Anthony Lopes tipping the ball onto the bar.“The penalties are taken by a couple of players, one is Cavani and the other is Neymar. There needs to be a gentleman’s agreement on the pitch to decide who takes the penalties,” coach Unai Emery admitted later.“We will sort things out internally for the next time, because I think they are both capable of taking them, and I want the two of them to mix up who takes them.”Those comments, and the fact Cavani was unsuccessful from the spot, suggests Neymar will get his chance in future.Cavani himself tried to play down any rift telling Uruguayan radio this kind of thing happened all the time in football.“I don’t know why people believe these stories. The truth is this kind of thing is normal, something that happens in football,” Cavani told Uruguay’s Radio Universal.“The truth is there’s no problem at all.”“He (Neymar) just arrived, he will surely emerge more and more. As I’ve said from the very beginning, we all have the positivity and willingness to help him adapt in the best way possible. I think he has shown he’s adapting quickly,” said Cavani. The Brazilian had previously tried and failed to grab the ball from Cavani when a penalty was awarded in the 3-0 win over Saint-Etienne last month. Cavani scored that time. Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

Foursquare’s Google Moment: Recommendations Launch Tonight

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting The race between tech companies aiming to tell you what to do with your free time will heat up tonight with the midnight launch of version 3.0 of location-based social network Foursquare. According to the company, its long awaited recommendations feature will be included. It’s one thing for Amazon or Netflix to recommend movies or other products you might like (that’s a huge business), it’s another thing for an automated system to tell you where you should go when you walk out the door of your house, what real-world venues you should patronize. That’s something a whole lot of companies are going to try to tackle, including Google and Facebook. The Enormity of Real-World RecommendationsInside every “where should I go?” question there are other big questions, like: What should I eat? What should I buy? What should I do with my leisure time plus expendable income? What should I do with my life? Foursquare would love to be a service that regularly answers those questions for millions of people. It’s a very ambitious goal. It’s reminiscent of the question Google has answered, “What Web page should I look at for information about my interest?” As big as the Web is, though – the offline world is bigger, richer and can be more interesting. Win at recommendations offline and your Web application has really done something big.Real-world place recommendations are higher risk (in terms of expense to the user who makes a purchase, the effort required and maybe social cost) but also much higher reward (in terms of lived experience gained and potential commercial activity) than online shopping or media consumption are. Can Foursquare get recommendations right and capture some of this huge potential? What Foursquare Brings to the TableFoursquare first began talking publicly about experiments with recommendation technologies six months ago. Three months ago the company posted a job opening for a data scientist, believed by observers to be someone who would focus on building out the recommendation technology.Nearly two years after launching, the company now says it is fast approaching 7.5 million users and has recorded 500 million user check-ins. Foursquare doesn’t disclose the number of venues it has indexed but one estimate is about 10 million bars, restaurants, parks, stores and other places across the world. If that number is accurate, that would mean there’s been about 50 check-ins per venue on average. That sounds like a healthy little data set to analyze for recommendations. Here’s how the company said today that data will be put to use:The idea is pretty simple: tell us what you’re looking for and we’ll help you find something nearby. The suggestions are based on a little bit of everything – the places you’ve been, the places your friends have visited, your loyalty to your favorite places, the categories and types of places you gravitate towards, what’s popular with other users, the day of the week, places with great tips, the time of day, and so on. We’ll even tell you why we think you should visit a certain place (e.g. popular with friends, similar to your favorite spots). You’ll find it’s helpful for general things like “food”, “coffee”, “nightlife” (we built in quick access to these searches) and you’ll be surprised by what you get when searching for really specific things, like “80s music,” “fireplaces,” “pancakes,” “bratwurst,” and “romantic.” The more random you get, the more interesting the results get (though be patient with this first release… sometimes we can’t find every random thing).Factors Contributing to the New Foursquare Recommendations Your friends’ historyYour loyalty to your favorite placesYour favorite categoriesPopular places across all usersWhat day of the week it isThe time of day a request is madeThe quality of tips a place hasWhat topical experts have to say.And outside of the “Explore” tab, you’ll see some of this thinking starting to surface on the “Me” tab as well. As we started to tinker with our recommendations algorithms, we started to see “expertise” starting to emerge from the data – we’re seeing friends that have been to every karaoke place within 10 miles or tried every burger in Los Angeles. The new “Me” tab surfaces some of this, letting you seek guidance from your friends on the categories and places they explore most. Now, with over half a billion data points, and with every additional check-in and every tip, foursquare gets a little smarter for you, your friends, and the rest of the community. We’re already finding this can be just as helpful for finding a brunch spot in your neighborhood as it can be for helping you navigate a new city for the first time. That sounds great, but the proof will be in the pudding of course. It’s great to hear that this complicated problem is being approached with at least nine different factors taken into consideration. A Design ChallengeWith that many moving parts, there will be engineering challenges for Foursquare for sure – but the resulting experience is what will matter most. Users will be able to know right away if recommendations are for places they have been intrigued by or places they know already and dislike. It’s going to take some finesse to really be compelling.“Machine learning,” wrote Joseph Reisinger in a recent blog post titled Why Generic Machine Learning Fails, “is not undifferentiated heavy lifting, it’s not commoditizable like EC2, and closer to design than coding. The Netflix prize is a good example: the last 10% reduction in RMSE wasn’t due to more powerful generic algorithms, but rather due to some very clever thinking about the structure of the problem; observations like ‘people who rate a whole slew of movies at one time tend to be rating movies they saw a long time ago’ from BellKor.”Will the Foursquare team be able to look at all the diverse kinds of data it has and thread the needle of the mobile, location-based, game-like, social experience in a way that means users look to it for recommendations of places to go in the offline world? Is this the feature that makes the millions of people who’ve looked at Foursquare and asked “what’s the point?” reconsider their perception of an abscence of value? “I actually think most people don’t want Google to answer their questions,” Google’s then-CEO Eric Schmidt said last summer. “They want Google to tell them what they should be doing next.”Google is far from the only company that will aim to solve that problem.Foursquare 3.0 for iPhone and Android should be available for exploring starting late tonight. IPL-5 ticket sales generated Rs 131.68 mn in play-offs

first_imgThe 2012 Indian Premier League (IPL) was a roaring success at box office. The income from sale of tickets broke all records as spectators packed the stadiums throughout the tournament.Franchisees made a killing from the league matches through the sale of tickets – at box office as well as online while the broadcasters too laughed their way to the bank after the final was telecasted in 192 countries. The IPL/BCCI too generated huge revenue from the four play-off matches – Rs 131.68 million to be precise. The IPL made this income from Qualifier 1, Qualifier 2, Eliminator and the final. The revenue from these games goes directly to the Board while the franchisees keep the income from the league matches.Except for the Qualifier 2 in Chennai on May 25, the stadiums hosting the play-off matches were packed to the hilt. Interestingly, the Madras High Court permitted the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association to open three stands, comprising about 12,500 seats, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium for the Qualifier 2 and the final, and it resulted in additional revenue.Sources said the revenue would have been much bigger, had the IPL not been forced to pay entertainment tax. “The IPL made a total revenue of Rs131.68 million and after paying Rs 28.24 million entertainment tax, the net revenue was Rs 103.44 million,” a source told Mail Today. The entertainment tax in Chennai was paid at a rate of 25 per cent and in Pune and Bangalore, where the Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator were played, it was 10 per cent.Rajeev Shukla, chairman of the IPL governing council, said spectators’ patronage was a proof of the unqualified success of the tournament. “The spectator response was excellent as they thronged to the grounds. It was so because their entry to the grounds was hassle-free and they were treated well by the franchisees, the police and the security,” Shukla told Mail Today. “Earlier, spectators found it difficult to purchase tickets. This time we made more tickets available online.”advertisementThe Qualifier 1 in Pune earned a total revenue of Rs 35.60 million, out of which tickets worth Rs17.80 million were sold at box office and exactly the same amount was generated through online sale. After paying Rs 3.62 million as entertainment tax, the IPL got Rs 31.98 million – the highest net revenue among the four knock-out games. For the Eliminator in Bangalore, tickets worth Rs 29.02 million were sold (Rs 23.86 million at box office and Rs 5.16 million online). After paying Rs3.55 million as tax, the IPL received Rs 25.47 million.Chennai hosted Qualifier 2 and ticket sale generated Rs 26.93 million (Rs 24.01 million at the window and Rs 2.92 million online). IPL earned a net revenue of Rs 18.09 million after paying Rs 8.84 million in taxes. For the final, between champions Kolkata Knight Riders and hosts Chennai Super Kings, tickets worth Rs 40.12 – the highest income before paying taxes were sold. Of this, Rs 33.81 million was generated from box office – the highest at this outlet amongst the four matches – and Rs 6.32 million from online sale.
